Hintergrund und Geschichte
Morgan Silberdollars sind eine der beliebtesten Serien von US-Münzen unter Sammlern. Die Münze wurde nach ihrem Designer George T. Morgan benannt. Sie wurden in jedem Jahr von 1878 bis 1904 geschlagen und wieder für ein einziges Jahr im Jahr 1921 wiederbelebt.
Ursprünglich wurde die Münze zugunsten der Silberbergbauunternehmen geschaffen, als der Kongress den Bland-Allison Act verabschiedete, der die Anzahl der monatlich produzierten Münzen effektiv diktierte.
Das Gesetz hat den Silberpreis künstlich aufgebläht, um die Interessen des Bergbaus zu befriedigen. Hunderte von Millionen dieser Münzen gingen nie in Umlauf und wurden in Stoffsäcken mit jeweils 1.000 Münzen gelagert. Das Schatzamt lagerte die Taschen dann in Regierungsgewölben.
Im Jahr 1918 wurden insgesamt 270.232.722 Münzen geschmolzen, aber viele Münzen blieben jahrzehntelang in den Regierungsgewölben. Obwohl die Münze in einigen Jahren Proof-Münzen produzierte, gelten nicht alle Münzen, die einen Cameo-Kontrast aufweisen, als Proof-Münzen.
